What we have been doing
October 2024
We had a very interesting talk from David Busby about bees for our September meeting. We learned how intelligent bees are and how they are able to detect the flowers they require, how they always return to the same hive and how they live in the hive. He brought with him some bees for us to see and also some of his lovely honey. We learned a lot about bees that we didn’t know before.
Our trip to Savill Gardens in September, which we didn’t manage to get to press before, was another lovely day out. We had a full coach and a lovely day of sunshine, which was a bonus as there was not a lot of shelter should it have been wet. The autumn herbaceous borders looked magnificent with their array of colours and in the woodland the hydrangeas were looking their best. We were welcomed with a cup of tea/coffee and homemade biscuits and there was plenty of choice in the restaurant and café for our lunch.
Our last outing of the summer was to Blists Hill Victorian Town near Telford where we stepped back in time to experience everyday life in the 1900’s. This was another successful day out, where again we had a welcome cup of tea/coffee and biscuit on our arrival. It is a reconstruction of a typical working-class town in the East Shropshire Coalfield c.1900. The staff dressed in Victorian costume were only too pleased to tell us about the exhibits and the fascinating stories behind them. We were able to have a sing-song in the pub, visit Victorian houses and shops and see the blacksmiths, the cobblers and the bakers. We were able to buy sweets in the sweetshop, and bread in the bakers. These could all be paid for in pre-decimal money, which we could change in the bank, or new money. It was interesting to see the difference in prices from “old money” and “new money” as everything was priced in the two currencies. The only disappointment was that the fish and chip shop wasn’t open on the day of our visit. We must thank Graham for organising our outings for this year and look forward to some more interesting trips next year.
If you were hoping to attend our first film show of the winter in September, I must apologise for giving the wrong date. We are in fact showing the film on Tuesday November 19th in the Church Room at 2pm. So put this date in your diaries. The cost is just £3 including tea/biscuit. We will be showing the film “The Limitation Game” which is about Alan Turing, a British mathematician who joins the cryptography team to decipher the German enigma code. With the help of his fellow mathematicians, he builds a machine to crack the codes and help us decipher codes from the enemy during the war. As we had a visit to Bletchley Park earlier in the year, we thought this would be a good follow-on film to see.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 8th October when we will have our “Open meeting”. This is a change from our printed programme as Chris will be on holiday on that date but he will be taking the meeting the following month.
Please note in October we will be back in the Village Hall.
